Biography, scientific achievements

Valery Samsonovich Petrosyan is a world-famous scientist and professor, the author of fundamental scientific papers on organometallic and coordination chemistry, as well as physical organic and environmental chemistry. In the last forty years, he has performed important research in such areas of science as ensuring the chemical safety of humans and the environment and developing methods for the synthesis of new types of tin and organophosphorus compounds with a unique structure, high reactivity and important types of biological (including anticancer) activity.

Petrosyan V.S. He is the author of more than 750 scientific papers. In 1976-77 he was a research fellow at one of the best research universities in the world, the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. In the well-known scientific school he created, there are 8 doctors of sciences who have become professors at Moscow State University and other leading universities in the world. 34 Ph.D. theses were defended under his supervision.

At the invitation of more than 120 international congresses and conferences, he has given keynote and plenary presentations in more than 80 countries on all continents. In 1990 he was elected an academician of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences and soon headed the Section of Chemistry in it and was elected vice-president of the academy. In 2003 he was awarded the medal of the Italian Chemical Society "For outstanding achievements in chemistry and environmental toxicology," In 2007 he was elected a Foreign Member of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia, and in 2016 a Foreign Member of the Academy of Sciences of the Institute of Bologna (Italy). In 2021, he was awarded the Prize of the Government of the Russian Federation in the field of science and technology.

Petrosyan V.S. Since 1967, he has been active in teaching. In 1974, he became an assistant professor, and since 1980, having become a professor, he has been reading for 14 years at the Faculty of Chemistry of Moscow State University "General course of organic chemistry", and then "Physical and chemical methods in organic and organoelement chemistry", interdepartmental course "Chemistry and toxicology of the environment" and the inter-faculty course "Chemistry, Man and the Environment", according to which in 2017 he publishes textbooks of the same name under the Presidential grant, written in collaboration with his student, Ph.D. chem. Sciences E.A. Shuvalova. Since 2019, he has been teaching the inter-faculty course "A new system for managing municipal solid waste", in which, together with A.E. Shipelov and E.A. Shuvalova is completing preparations for the publication in 2022 of the monograph of the same name. Within the framework of the Open Ecological University of Moscow State University, created by him in 1987, V.S. Petrosyan conducts annual free educational projects for the population of Moscow on the most pressing environmental issues, in which up to 600 students a year participate. Participants of these projects, who have listened to all the lectures, receive Certificates signed by the Rector of Moscow State University, Academician V.A. Sadovnichy.

V.S. Petrosyan has been a visiting professor many times in different countries on all five continents: Australia, Europe (Armenia, Great Britain, Hungary, Germany, Italy), Asia (China, Japan), North America (Canada, USA), South America (Argentina, Chile)

For many years, V.S. Petrosyan is a member of the editorial boards of Russian and international journals - Bulletin of Moscow State University. Chemical series, "Environmental Chemistry", "Ecology and Industry of Russia", "Chemical Safety", "Applied Organometallic Chemistry", "Annali Chimici" and "Conservation Science in Cultural Heritage".

V.S. Petrosyan since 1989 was the Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Ecological Council under the Supreme Council of the Russian Federation, and then until 1994 at the State Duma of the Russian Federation. Since 1993, he has been a UN expert on chemical safety, since 1994 - a member of the Executive Committee of the International Network of Engineers and Scientists for Global Responsibility (INES), since 1995 - a member of the Council of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance, and since 1996 - a member of the European Committee "Chemistry and Environment". In 2005, he became a member of the Advisory Environmental Council under the Mayor of Moscow, and in 2011 he was elected Chairman of the Environmental Council of the Moscow Government. V.S. Petrosyan was awarded the European Prize for Excellence in Environmental Education (2002), he was awarded the honorary title of Honored Professor of Moscow State University (2007). In 2011, by the Decree of the President of Russia, he was awarded the title of "Honored Worker of the Higher School of the Russian Federation", and in 2017 he was awarded the Order of Friendship by the Decree of the President of Russia. In 2021, he was elected an Honorary Doctor of the Russian-Armenian (Slavonic) University.

Since 2018, in parallel with lecturing at Moscow State University and organizing annual educational projects of the Open Ecological University V.S. Petrosyan works as Deputy General Director for Scientific Development of RT-Invest JSC, where he developed and published in 2020 (together with A.E. Shipelov) a new concept for municipal solid waste management in the Russian Federation, built on the analysis of MSW life cycles, taking into account the requirements of modern cyclical economy. In scientific publications in 2022 (together with A.E. Shipelov and E.A. Shuvalova), he clearly showed that modern plants for the thermal disposal of MSW are the real best available technologies in this area, both in the light of ensuring the ecological safety of the population and the environment, and and in light of the impact on global climate change.

Specialist in physical organic chemistry, chemistry of organometallic and coordination compounds, chemistry and environmental toxicology. He has more than 650 published works, is a co-author of the registered discovery "On the trans-strengthening of chemical bonds in the coordination compounds of non-transitional elements." Hirsch index according to RSCI - 46, according to Scopus - 23.
